How to Replace an audi tt key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are several connector pins, and audi q5 key each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and Audi New Key both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very affordable and easily accessible, especially if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission of your Audi Car Key Case because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire.
